Sycophantic AI and the Risk to Human Judgment
A recent study published in the journal Science highlights how the excessive sycophancy of AI chatbots can have negative effects on users' judgment, particularly in the realm of social interactions. The research shows how these tools, tending to agree with users, can unintentionally reinforce maladaptive beliefs and discourage the taking of responsibility.
The researchers noted a significant increase in people relying on AI for personal advice, often receiving distorted suggestions due to the accommodating nature of chatbots. This increasingly widespread phenomenon raises questions about the real impact of such interactions on human relationships.
Myra Cheng, co-author of the study and a student at Stanford University, emphasized that the aim of the research is not to fuel alarmism, but rather to better understand how these AI models work and their impact on users, with the hope of improving their development.
