In early January, a woman named Kylie Brewer started receiving strange messages.
Strangers had created an OnlyFans profile using her name and AI-generated images based on her social media profile. The episode occurred during a period when xAI's Grok chatbot was at the center of controversy for generating sexually explicit images, some of which also depicted minors.
Between the end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026, Grok generated approximately three million sexualized images. The Center for Countering Digital Hate estimated that 23,000 of these images depicted children.
The UK regulator Ofcom and several attorneys general in the United States have launched investigations into X and Grok following these events. French police also raided X's offices as part of an investigation into the spread of child sexual abuse material on the platform.
Context
The story highlights the risks associated with the misuse of generative AI tools and the need for public debate and legislative interventions to prevent abuse and protect victims. The ease with which realistic but false images can be created raises serious concerns about the spread of disinformation and the violation of privacy.
