AI: A Revolution in the World of Development?
Over the past two years, AI coding tools have made great strides, evolving from advanced autocomplete systems to solutions capable of developing entire applications from a text prompt. Tools like Anthropic's Claude Code and OpenAI's Codex can now work on software projects for hours, writing code, running tests, and, with human supervision, fixing bugs.
OpenAI says it now uses Codex to improve Codex itself, and has recently published technical details about how the tool works internally. This has raised questions: Is this just another wave of hype in the AI industry, or is there something different this time?
The Opinions of Developers
To better understand the situation, Ars Technica contacted several professional developers, asking them for their opinion on the practical use of these tools. The responses revealed a workforce that, while recognizing the effectiveness of the technology, remains divided on its real long-term utility. David Hagerty, a developer specializing in point-of-sale systems, said he was skeptical of the aggressive marketing of companies in the sector. "All the AI companies are hyping up the capabilities so much," he said. "Don't get me wrongโLLMs are revolutionary and will have an immense impact, but don't expect them to ever write the next great American novel or anything. It's not how they work."
