A New York federal court has made a rare decision: closing a case due to a lawyer's misuse of artificial intelligence (AI).
Fake citations and flowery style
District Judge Katherine Polk Failla justified the sanction with the presence of invented citations and an unnecessarily elaborate writing style in the submitted documents. In particular, "out-of-place" references to ancient libraries and Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 were found.
Correction requests ignored
Despite repeated requests to correct the documents, attorney Steven Feldman continued to file documents containing false citations. Judge Failla called one of the documents "noteworthy for its conspicuously florid prose," in contrast to other documents by the same attorney characterized by grammatical errors and rambling sentences.
For those considering on-premise deployments, there are trade-offs to consider. AI-RADAR offers analytical frameworks on /llm-onpremise to evaluate these aspects.
