## The rise of virtual companions Chatbots, thanks to their ability to simulate sophisticated conversations and empathetic behavior, are becoming increasingly popular as virtual companions. Many users use them to forge friendships or even romantic relationships. A study by Common Sense Media reveals that 72% of US teenagers have used AI for companionship. ## Risks and controversies Despite the potential emotional support, interaction with chatbots can exacerbate pre-existing problems. There have been reports of AI-induced delusions, reinforcement of false beliefs, and the illusion of having unlocked hidden knowledge. Families have filed lawsuits against OpenAI and Character.AI, claiming that the models contributed to the suicide of some teenagers. In September 2025, three lawsuits were filed against Character.AI and seven against OpenAI in November of the same year. ## Towards regulation First steps are being taken towards regulating virtual companions and limiting problematic uses. In California, a law has been passed requiring AI companies to publicize their efforts to protect users. OpenAI has introduced parental controls in ChatGPT and is working on a version of the chatbot dedicated to teenagers, with greater protections. The future of virtual companions therefore seems oriented towards greater regulation.
