Imagination Technologies has made significant progress in developing open-source graphics drivers for its PowerVR GPUs. In recent years, the company has invested in an upstream and open-source DRM (Direct Rendering Manager) kernel driver and a Vulkan driver within the Mesa project.

Integration with Zink

The primary focus has been on the PowerVR Vulkan driver, with the intention of leveraging Zink, a generic OpenGL-on-Vulkan implementation. This approach allows for providing open-source OpenGL support on PowerVR GPUs via the Vulkan driver.

Mesa 26.1

With the upcoming release of Mesa 26.1, this goal will be fully realized. Zink will work nicely atop the PowerVR Vulkan driver, paving the way for open-source OpenGL support for PowerVR GPUs. This represents a significant step forward for the open-source community and for developers using PowerVR hardware.
