eyeo Secures €40 Million to Accelerate Innovation in Image Sensors
Dutch nanophotonic imaging company eyeo has announced the closing of a €40 million Series A funding round. The operation, led by Innovation Industries with participation from existing investors such as imec.xpand, Invest-NL, Qbic, High-Tech Gründerfonds, and Brabant Development Agency, brings the company's total capital raised to €55 million. This significant investment is earmarked to support eyeo's transition from technology development to large-scale commercial delivery.
Founded to commercialize technology developed at imec, eyeo focuses on developing nanophotonic solutions for color splitting in image sensors. These sensors find application across a wide range of devices and systems, from smartphones to industrial systems, extended reality (XR) devices, smart cities, and autonomous applications—sectors where the quality and efficiency of image capture are critical parameters.
The NCOS® Platform: A Generational Leap in Visual Perception
At the core of eyeo's offering is the NCOS® platform, an innovative technology designed to overcome the inherent limitations of conventional color filters. These filters, in fact, block a significant portion of incoming light, compromising image quality in low-light conditions and limiting color fidelity. eyeo's solution replaces these traditional filters by more efficiently splitting and directing light to individual pixels.
This approach results in a notable improvement in light sensitivity, color accuracy, and overall image resolution. A key advantage of the NCOS® technology is its compatibility with existing CMOS sensor platforms, facilitating integration. Furthermore, it enables the creation of ultra-compact sub-micron pixels, paving the way for high-performance sensors for applications requiring reduced size and advanced imaging capabilities. As co-founder and CEO Jeroen Hoet emphasized, "Every modern device that sees the world, from smartphones to autonomous systems, is held back by the same 50-year-old constraint. eyeo removes it at the source."
Implications for Edge AI and Data Sovereignty
eyeo's innovation holds significant implications for the artificial intelligence landscape, particularly for Edge AI deployments and applications demanding high data sovereignty. Improving the quality and efficiency of image capture directly at the source, i.e., on the sensor, means providing richer and more accurate input data to AI models. This can reduce the need for complex post-capture processing, optimizing the computational resources required for inference on edge devices or in self-hosted environments.
For sectors such as autonomous systems, industrial robotics, or smart city infrastructures, where latency is critical and the management of sensitive data is a priority, more performant sensors mean faster and more reliable decisions. The ability to process high-quality data locally, without having to send it to external clouds, reinforces the principles of data sovereignty and compliance—crucial aspects for many organizations evaluating self-hosted alternatives. For those assessing on-premise deployments, optimizing data at the source can directly influence the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and the hardware specifications needed for AI/LLM workloads.
Growth Prospects and Technological Development
The funds raised will be utilized by eyeo to expand its in-house engineering capabilities and strengthen partnerships with OEM customers. The goal is to accelerate the commercial deployment of its imaging technology, bringing innovations from the laboratory to the market at scale. The company also plans to invest in the development of next-generation 3D-stacked CMOS image sensors, a direction that promises further improvements in performance and miniaturization.
In parallel, eyeo intends to expand its teams dedicated to IC (Integrated Circuit) and system architecture, solidifying its technological leadership. The operation also benefits from support from the European Union under the InvestEU Fund, underscoring the strategic importance of this technology for European innovation. This growth trajectory positions eyeo as a key player in the future of digital visual perception, with a profound impact on how intelligent systems will interact with the physical world.
