Klaris, a London-based startup specializing in AI-driven solutions for automating regulatory compliance in the medical device sector, has announced the closing of a $1 million pre-seed funding round.
Investors
The round was led by Meridian Health Ventures, a specialist fund backed by Guyโs and St Thomasโ NHS Foundation Trust, Kingโs College Hospital, University College London Hospitals, and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Existing investor Antler also participated, alongside Vento Ventures, Milan-based private investment firm Alecla7, and a group of MedTech and regulatory-focused angel investors.
Regulatory Challenges in the Medtech Sector
The medical device market is growing rapidly, with projections exceeding $1.1 trillion by 2034. However, regulations pose a significant challenge for companies bringing products to market. FDA analyses indicate that a considerable share of 510(k) submissions have quality deficiencies, and many are rejected at the first submission stage. In Europe, increasingly stringent regulatory requirements related to MDR and IVDR have led to a reduction in research and development activities and a decrease in the number of devices available on the European market.
Klaris's Solution
To address these challenges, Klaris has developed AI-powered software designed to support compliance for medical device manufacturers. The platform automates compliance and consistency checks in technical documentation, helping teams identify gaps, maintain alignment with regulatory requirements, and prepare for submissions and audits. The goal is to replace manual documentation processes with a more streamlined approach, improving traceability, data security, and efficiency throughout the product lifecycle.
Future Prospects
With the new funding, Klaris plans to expand its engineering and product teams and accelerate commercial expansion into the European market, following an initial successful phase in the UK and Italy.
