Water leak detection with fiber optics

Lightsonic has announced a new application for its fiber optic infrastructure: the detection of leaks in underground water pipes. The technology leverages the ability of fiber to perceive minute vibrations in the ground.

Machine learning for vibration analysis

The system uses machine learning algorithms to analyze the vibrations captured by the fiber optic and isolate the source of the leaks. This allows to distinguish between environmental noises and specific signals of a water leak.

Impact on reducing water waste

In the first three months of testing, Lightsonic's technology prevented the loss of approximately 2 million liters of water per day. This result highlights the potential of fiber optics for monitoring and managing water infrastructure, helping to reduce waste and optimize resource utilization.
