## Linux says goodbye to HIPPI: a piece of computer history The Linux kernel is preparing to say goodbye to a piece of computer history: the High Performance Parallel Interface (HIPPI). This standard, popular in the late 1980s and early 1990s, represented the cutting-edge solution for connecting supercomputers at the time. HIPPI offered connectivity of almost 1 Gigabit per second (800 Mb/s to be precise) over distances of up to 25 meters, a remarkable achievement for the time. Its removal from the kernel is planned with the arrival of Linux 7.0. ## A look at the future Alongside the farewell to HIPPI, the Linux development team is already working on the technologies of the future. In particular, preparations are underway with NVIDIA to support 1.6 Terabit per second connections, designed for next-generation supercomputers. This demonstrates how the world of computing is constantly evolving, with standards that are born, grow and are then replaced by more performing solutions.
