Meta under fire for Ray-Ban user data privacy
A recent report from Sweden sheds new light on Meta's privacy practices. According to the report, employees of Sama, a Kenya-based company operating as a subcontractor for Meta, reportedly had access to footage taken by Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses containing sensitive user data.
Sama employees are primarily involved in data annotation for Meta's artificial intelligence systems. The report, a collaboration between the Swedish newspapers Svenska Dagbladet and Gรถteborgs-Posten, and Kenyan freelance journalist Naipanoi Lepapa, is based on interviews with over 30 Sama employees, including several involved in video, image, and audio annotation for Meta's AI systems. Some of the interviewees have also worked on projects other than Meta's smart glasses.
The report's authors state that they did not have direct access to the materials handled by Sama employees or the areas where data annotation is performed. The report also includes interviews with former Meta employees in the United States, who reportedly witnessed real-time data annotation for several Meta projects.
For those evaluating on-premise deployments, there are trade-offs to consider carefully. AI-RADAR offers analytical frameworks on /llm-onpremise to evaluate these aspects.
