## Micron Boosts DRAM Production with Powerchip Acquisition Micron has found a quick way to expand its DRAM manufacturing capacity by acquiring a chipmaking campus from Taiwanese outfit Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC). The deal is valued at $1.8 billion. PSMC had opened this fab just 19 months ago, after investing $9.5 billion. The acquisition will enable Micron to respond more effectively to the growing demand for DRAM, essential components for computers, smartphones, and other electronic devices. ## The DRAM Market The DRAM market is characterized by strong competition and cycles of expansion and contraction of production capacity. Companies like Micron, Samsung, and SK Hynix are the main players in the sector and are constantly investing in new technologies and plants to maintain their competitiveness. Acquiring existing fabs is a strategy to quickly increase production, avoiding the long lead times required to build new facilities.
