OCP and IOWN: towards the future of distributed datacenters
The Open Compute Project (OCP) is collaborating with IOWN (Innovative Optical and Wireless Network) to define the specifications for distributed datacenters. The goal is to create an infrastructure capable of supporting complex workloads, such as those related to artificial intelligence, which require low latency and high bandwidth.
The initiative stems from the observation that AI cannot be relegated solely to the centralized datacenters of large technology players. The need to process data close to its origin, combined with the growing demand for AI applications, makes the development of distributed architectures essential.
IOWN, with its all-optical technology stack, promises to overcome the limitations of traditional networks, offering a solution to interconnect distributed datacenters efficiently and performantly. This approach could foster the creation of a "computing continuum", where computing resources are distributed and accessible transparently, regardless of their physical location.
