OpenAI has announced the release of a desktop application for macOS dedicated to Codex, its programming tool based on a large language model (LLM).
Application Details
Codex was previously accessible via command-line interface (CLI) on the web or within integrated development environments (IDEs) via extensions. With this new app, OpenAI aims to simplify the simultaneous management of multiple development agents, often engaged in parallel tasks that extend for several hours. The company argues that neither the CLI nor the IDE extensions represent ideal interfaces for this type of use.
Comparison with Claude Code
The launch of this desktop app represents an attempt by OpenAI to compete directly with Anthropic's Claude Code, which already offered a macOS version. The usefulness of this new interface will ultimately depend on the specific needs and usage patterns of each developer.
