Wave Ventures: A Decade of Nordic Startup Support with a New €10 Million Fund

Wave Ventures, a Nordic venture capital firm, is celebrating a significant milestone: ten years since its founding as a student-led initiative in Helsinki. To mark the occasion, the firm has announced the final close of its third fund, reaching €10 million. This represents a substantial increase from its previous €2 million fund, underscoring the growth and confidence placed in Wave Ventures' investment model.

The closing of this fund not only solidifies Wave Ventures' position as a key player in the Nordic startup ecosystem but also highlights a distinctive approach to venture capital. Fund III is managed entirely by a team of investors aged 25 and under, a fact that reflects the fund's commitment to fostering new generations of talent in the sector. The capital was raised with the support of founders, operators, and investors from prominent companies such as Spotify, Wolt, Slack, Bolt, Oura, Nokia, and Supercell, as well as European early-stage venture capital firms and family offices.

Investment Strategy and Market Impact

Founded in 2016, Wave Ventures has specialized in angel and pre-seed investments, often positioning itself among the first institutional investors to back Nordic startups. This strategy has allowed the fund to identify and nurture emerging talents from their earliest stages. To date, Wave Ventures has made over 50 investments, contributing to the growth of companies like Inven and Tzafon. Its effectiveness was further demonstrated in 2024, when it supported three of the five Nordic startups accepted into the prestigious Y Combinator program.

With the new €10 million fund, Wave Ventures plans to further expand its investment activity across the Nordic region. Plans include investing up to €300,000 in individual early-stage companies, with the goal of supporting between 10 and 20 teams annually. This targeted approach and the ability to intervene at such early stages are crucial for the development of an innovative ecosystem, providing the necessary capital to transform promising ideas into concrete realities.

The Wave Rebellion Grant Program: Supporting Unconventional Founders

In parallel with the fund's close, Wave Ventures has launched the Wave Rebellion Grant, a €240,000 program specifically designed to support early-stage founders across the Nordics. This initiative will provide grants and partner credits to selected entrepreneurs, with support from leading technology companies such as AWS, Anthropic, Lovable, Modal, and Verda. The program targets founders in the very earliest stages of company building, including those who are still pre-idea, pre-funding, or just beginning their entrepreneurial journey.

Johannes Korpela, CEO of Wave Ventures, emphasized the importance of this program: "Some of the most exceptional founders don't fit neatly into existing startup programs, accelerators, or university tracks. Venture capital often relies on pattern matching, but the best founders rarely look obvious before their breakouts. The Rebellion Grant is our way of supporting them earlier." This philosophy aims to discover and support talents that might be overlooked by traditional channels, fostering greater diversity and innovation within the ecosystem.

Ecosystem Contribution and Future Outlook

Beyond its direct investment activity, Wave Ventures has played a fundamental role in developing the Nordic startup ecosystem through its talent network. Alumni of its rotation-based investment program have gone on to found startups, investment firms, and entrepreneurial communities across Europe, such as Founders House, a startup hub operating in Helsinki and Stockholm. This demonstrates how Wave Ventures' commitment extends beyond mere funding, actively contributing to the formation of a new generation of leaders and innovators.

The expansion of investment activities and the launch of the Rebellion Grant further strengthen Wave Ventures' mission to be a catalyst for innovation in the region. In a global context where technology and AI are redefining industries, supporting early-stage startups is crucial. While Wave Ventures' focus is broad and not specific to AI, creating fertile ground for new businesses can indirectly foster the development of advanced technological solutions, including potential on-premise deployments for AI workloads, where data sovereignty and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) are increasingly relevant considerations for companies seeking control and optimization.
