XMMS: a return from the past
XMMS, a music player that marked an era for Linux users, is about to make its return. Inspired by the famous Winamp, XMMS has been a milestone in digital music listening on open source operating systems for many years.
Rebirth thanks to AI
About two decades after the last official release, the XMMS source code has been revived and modernized thanks to artificial intelligence. The result is a complete port to GTK4 and GStreamer/PipeWire, which allows the software to work with the latest audio and graphics technologies.
This project demonstrates how AI can be used to preserve and improve legacy software, making it usable again on modern platforms. Great news for nostalgics and anyone who wants to rediscover a classic of free software.
