Balderton welcomes Phil Chambers to its partnership

Balderton, one of Europe's leading venture capital funds, has announced the appointment of Phil Chambers as a new Partner. In this role, Chambers will focus on early-stage investments, bringing his extensive experience to support emerging startups in the continent's technology ecosystem. The appointment underscores Balderton's commitment to strengthening its team with individuals who possess proven operational and investment expertise.

Chambers' arrival is a clear signal of the fund's desire to capitalize on deep market knowledge and the growth dynamics of technology companies. His profile fits into a context where venture capital funds increasingly seek to offer not only capital but also strategic mentorship and practical support to founders, crucial elements for success in today's competitive landscape.

A two-decade journey of founding and growth

Phil Chambers boasts a career spanning over two decades as a founder, operator, and angel investor, with significant roles in London, Hamburg, and Copenhagen. Most recently, he served as CEO of Orbex, a Scottish space launch company, demonstrating his ability to lead ventures in high-innovation sectors.

Prior to Orbex, Chambers co-founded and led Peakon, a Balderton portfolio company focused on employee engagement. Under his leadership, Peakon achieved rapid international expansion from Denmark into the UK, Germany, the US, and the APAC region, culminating in its acquisition by Workday for $700 million in 2021. Subsequently, Chambers spent two and a half years as General Manager at Workday, where he helped grow Peakon's global footprint to hundreds of millions in Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR). His computer science education at the University of Manchester and early experiences at startups like Gumtree and Qype, along with his role as CTO at Podio (acquired by Citrix), laid the groundwork for his entrepreneurial vision, which led him to create Peakon, a product that revolutionized the employee listening market.

Experience serving the European ecosystem

Alongside his operational career, Chambers has distinguished himself as one of Europe's most active angel investors, backing over 100 startups. This dual perspective, as both a builder and a financier, gives him a unique understanding of the challenges and opportunities founders face. At Balderton, Phil Chambers will draw upon this wealth of experience to guide and support founders in starting and scaling their businesses across Europe.

Bernard Liautaud, Managing Partner at Balderton, expressed great enthusiasm for the appointment, recalling his long collaboration with Chambers: โ€œI have had the pleasure of knowing Phil for almost a decade now, first working with him as a board member of Peakon, where I saw him grow the company from virtually nothing to a $700 million acquisition by Workday. We then stayed close during his tenure at Workday, and his Orbex years. I could not be more excited to welcome Phil to the Balderton partnership.โ€

Outlook and vision for the future

Phil Chambers' arrival further strengthens Balderton's position as a key player in the European venture capital landscape, capable of attracting high-profile talent with deep knowledge. His ability to identify and nurture potential in early-stage startups will be fundamental for the fund, which continues to invest in the continent's most promising technologies.

Phil Chambers commented on his new role with enthusiasm: โ€œIโ€™m absolutely delighted to be joining the Balderton team: an incredible group of people, working with the most impressive companies in Europe, and a fund at the top of its game.โ€ This synergy between operational experience and venture capital is an increasingly sought-after model in the industry, promising to generate significant value for founders and the entire European tech ecosystem.
