OpenAI has announced that it will begin testing advertisements inside ChatGPT for some US users. ## Advertising Goals The move is motivated by the desire to expand its user base and diversify revenue streams. This change marks a reversal for CEO Sam Altman, who had previously expressed reservations about introducing advertising in ChatGPT, calling it a last resort due to fears of undermining user trust. ## Modalities and Timelines The banner ads will be visible in the coming weeks to users of the free version of ChatGPT and the new $8 per month ChatGPT Go plan. The latter, initially launched in India in August 2025, has been extended to over 170 countries. Users subscribed to the Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans will not see any advertisements. The introduction of advertising represents an attempt by OpenAI to find new sources of funding, given the large amount of resources needed to maintain and further develop ChatGPT. The company is exploring various ways to monetize its technology, including premium subscriptions and partnerships with other companies.
