The eco-friendly alternative to disposable diapers
Finnish startup Elea & Lili has raised €2.5 million to replace plastic in disposable diapers. The main problem is polyacrylate, a synthetic crystal derived from petroleum that is at the heart of every modern diaper. This material does not break down and persists for centuries, releasing microplastics into soil and groundwater.
The hygiene industry considers polyacrylate an engineering necessity, as no other material absorbs as quickly and in such large quantities. Elea & Lili aims to develop a cellulose-based alternative, with the goal of drastically reducing the environmental impact of diapers.
The problem of microplastics
The persistence of polyacrylate in the environment poses a serious threat. The slow degradation of this material leads to the release of microplastics, which contaminate soil and water resources. The startup Elea & Lili aims to address this problem at its root, offering a biodegradable and sustainable solution.
