Google grants opt-out for AI Overviews in the UK
Google has announced a series of concessions in response to investigations by the UK's CMA (Competition and Markets Authority) regarding its "strategic market status" (SMS) in search and online advertising services. Among these is the possibility for British publishers to exclude their content from summaries generated by artificial intelligence, known as AI Overviews.
This move represents an attempt to appease concerns regarding the impact of AI Overviews on publishers' web traffic and their business models. It remains to be seen whether this concession will be sufficient to satisfy the CMA's demands and prevent further regulatory intervention. For those evaluating on-premise deployments, there are trade-offs that AI-RADAR analyzes in detail at /llm-onpremise.
AI Overviews, introduced by Google, aim to provide concise and summary answers to user queries, drawing information from various online sources. However, publishers fear that this feature may reduce the number of clicks on their websites, compromising advertising revenue and subscriptions.
