Groundhawk, a Finnish company specializing in infrastructure software, has announced €2 million in Seed funding to transform the mapping and documentation of underground utilities.
The problem of outdated infrastructure
Europe is investing heavily in electricity grids, fiber networks, and EV charging stations. However, the documentation of underground infrastructure often remains outdated, based on post-construction surveys and inaccurate estimates. This results in over €100 billion in annual global damage, project delays, and safety risks.
Groundhawk's solution
Groundhawk replaces analogue documentation with real-time, AI-powered 3D capture. Construction crews can record precise underground data while trenches are open, creating digital models with centimetre-level accuracy instantly synced to the cloud. The technology combines high-precision satellite positioning, 3D scanning, and AI analytics to embed quality assurance directly into the construction workflow.
Benefits and customers
The solution allows verification of correct cable and duct installation before site closure, transforming documentation into an active quality control tool. This approach offers up to 50% cost savings on surveying and provides project managers with immediate visibility into contractor progress and compliance. Groundhawk serves network owners, prime contractors, and subcontractors in fiber and electricity infrastructure projects, including Eltel Networks, Voimatel, and Elvera.
Future prospects
The funding will support commercial expansion in Germany, the UK, Benelux, and the Nordic countries, the expansion of the engineering team to enhance AI and spatial intelligence capabilities, and the development of new product features for planning support and predictive quality assurance.
