Slang Interpretation and LLMs: A Complex Challenge

Slang interpretation poses a significant challenge for Large Language Models (LLMs), as the meaning of slang expressions is inherently linked to specific cultural and linguistic contexts. Without targeted training data, LLMs struggle to accurately interpret slang based solely on lexical information.

A New Framework: Greedy Search and Chain-of-Thought

A recent study addressed this issue, presenting a framework based on greedy search guided by chain-of-thought prompting. This approach aims to improve the accuracy of slang interpretation, especially in resource-constrained scenarios.

Experimental results indicate that model size and temperature settings have a limited impact on inference accuracy. Surprisingly, Transformer-based models with a high number of active parameters did not demonstrate significantly higher accuracy compared to smaller models. Based on these observations, the proposed framework integrates greedy search algorithms with chain-of-thought prompting, achieving improvements in slang interpretation accuracy.

This study contributes to the understanding of context dependency in language models and offers a practical solution for enhancing slang comprehension through a structured reasoning framework.
