AI Models Unknowingly Used in Scams
An investigation by WIRED has uncovered the existence of numerous Telegram channels offering jobs as "AI face models." Behind these offers lies an opaque business: the faces of the women hired would be used to perpetrate online scams.
The Scam Mechanism
The women who respond to these ads, often attracted by the promise of easy money, may not be aware of the real use that will be made of their image. Their faces, in fact, would be used to create fake profiles or manipulated videos, used to deceive victims and steal their money.
Risks and Implications
This practice raises serious ethical and legal questions. The "AI models" risk being involved in illegal activities without their knowledge, with potentially serious consequences for their reputation and their safety. The spread of deepfakes and other image manipulation technologies makes it increasingly difficult to distinguish the real from the fake, increasing the risk of fraud and disinformation.
