Open Cosmos, a startup based in Oxford, aims to compete with Starlink in the satellite communications sector. The company has announced its intention to produce up to 200 satellites per year, offering European governments and businesses a viable alternative.
ConnectedCosmos: the sovereign network
The satellite network, called ConnectedCosmos, is designed to provide sovereign communications, in response to European concerns about dependence on transcontinental mega-constellations. Open Cosmos, founded in 2015, designs and operates satellites for collecting crucial data, addressing global challenges such as connectivity and climate change.
Production capacity
Open Cosmos CEO Rafel Jordร Siquier stated that the company is ready to produce up to 200 satellites per year from its main hub in Harwell, near Oxford, with an average capacity of one satellite every three days.
European alternative
Open Cosmos' initiative is proposed as a European alternative to Starlink, especially in light of the reservations expressed by EU officials regarding dependence on the latter, used in Ukraine by civilians, government and the military. The company has already signed contracts for tens of millions of pounds and is supported by investors such as ETF Partners, Accenture Ventures and Taavet Hinrkus, founder of Wise, raising over $63 million.
