Seagate has announced that it has begun shipping 32TB hard disk drives (HDDs) based on heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) technology. ## New 32TB HAMR HDDs These new HDDs represent the first capacity increase for Seagate's high-end drives since the introduction of HAMR technology to the retail market last year. The drives are designed for applications requiring high storage capacity, such as servers, Network Attached Storage (NAS) systems, and surveillance systems. HAMR technology allows for increased data density on hard drives, offering higher capacities compared to traditional technologies. This translates to a greater amount of data that can be stored in the same physical space, resulting in lower costs per gigabyte. Hard drives remain a fundamental component for mass storage, especially in scenarios where the cost per terabyte is a critical factor. Despite the advancement of solid-state drives (SSDs), HDDs continue to be preferred for storing large amounts of data, thanks to their advantageous cost/capacity ratio.
