The adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) is generating uncertainty, especially among young people, regarding the future of work. The AI Café, an initiative promoted by Auburn University, was created to address these concerns through an open dialogue between experts, students, and community members.

The AI Café Model

The AI Café consists of informal conversations in which participants share their experiences with AI. The goal is to demystify the technology and counter catastrophic narratives, promoting a vision of AI developed with and for the community. Key principles include:

  • Avoiding technical jargon.
  • Focusing on current experiences with AI.
  • Valuing diverse perspectives.
  • Promoting active listening.

Learnings and Perspectives

Participants expressed frustration that commercial interests drive AI development at the expense of the public good. However, when given space to express their concerns, the desire to actively participate in shaping the future of AI emerges. Shared priorities include fairness, creativity, dignity, and community.

How to Start an AI Café

The AI Café model can be replicated in different contexts. Key elements for success include:

  • Informal and welcoming spaces.
  • Small group discussions.
  • Involvement of experts from different disciplines.
  • A values-based approach.

Instead of starting from technical expertise, start by asking participants what kind of world they want and how AI could contribute to or hinder that vision. The goal is to transform concerns into solutions, promoting AI that serves the public good.
