Aletheia: An Innovative Approach to Combating Fake News

The rampant spread of fake news poses a growing threat to public trust and democratic institutions. To counter this phenomenon, it is essential to have effective, transparent, and user-centered detection tools.

A new study introduces Aletheia, a browser extension that leverages the power of Large Language Models (LLMs) and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) to identify fake news and provide evidence-based explanations.

Aletheia integrates two interactive components:

  • A Discussion Hub that facilitates dialogue among users about flagged content.
  • A "Stay Informed" feature that highlights the most recent fact-checks.

Experimental results demonstrate that Aletheia outperforms existing solutions in terms of accuracy in detecting fake news. A study conducted on 250 participants also confirms its usability and perceived effectiveness, highlighting its potential as a transparent tool for combating online disinformation.
