Axelera AI, a Dutch company that designs and manufactures chips for AI inference, has announced a $250 million funding round, led by Innovation Industries and with the support of new investors like BlackRock.

The company focuses on designing and manufacturing chips and software for AI inference, a crucial computational process for running AI models. Unlike training, inference is becoming increasingly important as companies adopt AI solutions.

Focus on the Edge

Axelera AI's chips are designed for local use on edge devices, such as smartphones. The goal is to make AI more energy efficient by processing data directly on devices rather than in the cloud. This approach, according to the company, addresses the power and cooling limitations of data centers.

Fabrizio Del Maffeo, CEO and co-founder of Axelera AI, emphasized how edge AI solutions must operate within strict energy and bandwidth constraints. Axelera AI's architecture is designed to overcome these obstacles, making AI deployment economically feasible and protecting data privacy by processing information locally.

The company claims to have 500 customers in sectors such as defense, agritech, and robotics.
