Nvidia bets on photonics for data centers
Nvidia has announced a $4 billion investment in photonics companies, specifically Lumentum and Coherent. This strategic move aims to strengthen data center interconnect supply chains, a critical component for the performance and efficiency of computing infrastructures.
The investment will be used to fund research and development activities in the United States, with the aim of improving existing technologies and developing new ones. Another significant portion of the funds will be used to expand production capacity, ensuring greater availability of essential components. Finally, Nvidia secures capacity rights and future access to the technologies developed.
This investment underscores the growing importance of high-speed interconnects in modern data centers, where demand for bandwidth continues to grow exponentially. Photonics, which uses light to transmit data, offers significant advantages in terms of speed, energy efficiency, and distance compared to traditional electrical interconnects.
