Snowflake's AI Expansion: A Dual Approach
Snowflake is strengthening its position in the artificial intelligence landscape with the expansion of its Snowflake Intelligence and Cortex Code platforms. The objective is to consolidate the adoption and development of AI solutions within its ecosystem, offering tools tailored to different user types. This strategy reflects the growing demand for AI capabilities for both daily business operations and complex application development.
Snowflake Intelligence is designed for non-technical business users, providing an intuitive interface for task execution via natural language. Cortex Code, on the other hand, targets development teams and technical specialists, offering a coding and orchestration "layer" for integrating AI into software development processes. Both platforms benefit from new functionalities, including an increase in third-party software integrations and the introduction of advanced automation capabilities.
Snowflake Intelligence: AI for Business
Snowflake Intelligence is positioned as a tool for automating tasks within existing business workflows. Users can interact with the Large Language Model (LLM) by describing desired actions in natural language, such as preparing presentations, running multi-step analyses, or sending follow-up messages. The platform can draw data from an organization's internal and external digital assets, including structured and unstructured data, thanks to predefined protocols and connectors.
A crucial aspect for businesses is data governance. Snowflake Intelligence implements strict access limitations and permissions, ensuring compliance and preventing data loss. The platform introduces new interfaces based on MCP (Model Context Protocol) and integrates with widely used systems like the Google business suite, Jira, and Salesforce (including Slack). An iOS version of the application is also planned, entering public preview soon. Personalization is another strong point: the platform learns from user behavior, allowing workflows to be saved and shared, and reducing the need to repeat contextualized prompts thanks to longer context windows. These updates are the result of feedback collected through Project SnowWork, a research initiative launched to gather user preferences.
Cortex Code: Tools for Developers
Cortex Code is specifically designed for enterprise software development teams, where AI algorithms can optimize lower-level tasks. Described as a coding and orchestration "layer," Cortex Code offers new options for integration with external data sources, now supporting AWS Glue, Databricks, and Postgres. The platform can also connect to other LLMs via MCP and ACP (Agent Communication Protocol), the latter being a commerce-driven protocol that emerged concurrently with MCP.
For developers, Snowflake is releasing a Cortex Code extension for VS Code, currently in private preview, and a plugin for Claude Code is under development. An Agent Software Development Kit (SDK) for Python and TypeScript is already available, allowing teams to embed Cortex Code functions into their own applications. Cloud Agents, also in private preview, will be accessible via Snowsight, Snowflake's browser-based interface. The "Plan Mode" feature allows users to preview and approve workflows before AI execution, and the company is working on a solution that will enable end-users to examine the longer research processes undertaken by the LLM to verify their veracity.
Implications and Enterprise Outlook
Snowflake's dual-pronged approach, targeting both mainstream business users and software development teams, solidifies its presence in the core technical market while expanding its adoption among users with more general business functions. The new software connectors, mobile app, and browser-based options open up a broader market, while additional support for existing systems increases appeal for large enterprises with embedded workflows and software platforms.
According to Snowflake, over 9,100 customers use its AI products weekly, and more than half of customers have adopted Snowflake Intelligence and Cortex Code within six months of their launch. Sameer Vuyyuru, Chief AI and Product Officer at Capita, emphasized how Snowflake supports the secure deployment of AI with proper governance in highly regulated, citizen-facing services, where performance, compliance, and trust are critical factors. This highlights the importance of solutions that ensure data sovereignty and control, fundamental aspects for organizations evaluating self-hosted or hybrid alternatives for AI/LLM workloads. For those considering on-premise deployment, analytical frameworks can help define the trade-offs between cloud solutions and local infrastructures.
