tozero: Cutting-edge battery recycling in Europe
The German startup tozero has launched Europe's first industrial battery recycling plant, located in the Gendorf chemical park in Bavaria. The demo plant has a processing capacity of 1,500 tonnes of battery waste per year.
High-purity lithium carbonate production
The plant is capable of producing 100 tonnes of high-purity lithium carbonate, at costs the company says are half those of conventional miners. tozero plans to build a full-scale facility with a capacity of 45,000 tonnes per year by 2030.
Background
Battery recycling is a crucial element in the transition to a more sustainable and circular economy. With the increasing demand for batteries for electric vehicles and energy storage systems, efficient management of battery waste is becoming increasingly important. Innovative technologies such as those developed by tozero can help reduce dependence on extracted raw materials and minimize environmental impact.
