UK aims to become an AI superpower
The UK government has launched an appeal to tech startups to undertake bolder initiatives in the field of artificial intelligence, assuring its support. This invitation comes as the UK aims to become a global leader in AI, attracting investments from tech giants for the construction of large-scale data centers and promoting the development of a flourishing domestic AI ecosystem.
Fractile's Investment
In this context, Fractile, a British chip startup, has announced an investment of ยฃ100 million in its UK headquarters over the next three years. Founded in 2022, Fractile focuses on developing next-generation chips for the inference of large language models (LLMs), with the aim of competing with Nvidia.
The investment will be allocated to the expansion of the London and Bristol sites and the creation of a new industrial hardware engineering center in the UK. Fractile, which currently employs 80 people and is supported by the NATO Innovation Fund and Kindred Capital, also plans to expand its UK-based team to develop and improve next-generation systems.
Technological Sovereignty
The Minister for AI, Kanishka Narayan, emphasized the need for greater British technology ownership to enable the UK to exert greater influence in the sector. He also highlighted how future growth should not be reserved only for the elites, but that the potential of AI is broad and offers the opportunity to spread the benefits in all regions and communities of the country.
For those evaluating on-premise deployments, there are trade-offs to consider. AI-RADAR offers analytical frameworks on /llm-onpremise to evaluate these aspects.
