Western Digital Focuses on High-Efficiency HDDs
Western Digital has announced the development of hard disk drives (HDDs) focused on two key aspects: increased performance and reduced power consumption. This strategic move aims to position HDDs as a viable alternative to solid-state drives (SSDs) based on QLC NAND technology, which are particularly popular in environments where storage density and cost per gigabyte are critical factors.
The company promises to double performance thanks to a new dual-actuator high-bandwidth architecture, with a roadmap that anticipates an increase of up to eight times the current performance. At the same time, the new HDDs are designed to reduce power consumption by 20%, a fundamental aspect for data centers looking to optimize operating costs and reduce environmental impact.
For those evaluating on-premise deployments, there are trade-offs between HDDs and SSDs in terms of performance, cost, and energy consumption. AI-RADAR offers analytical frameworks on /llm-onpremise to evaluate these trade-offs.
