Altman: AI energy consumption is relative
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has expressed his views on the energy efficiency of artificial intelligence, suggesting that criticisms often leveled at AI in this area do not take the big picture into account. According to Altman, comparing the energy consumption of AI to that of humans, considering the entire span of human history, puts the real impact into perspective.
Altman pointed out how humans have consumed enormous amounts of resources over the millennia, not only to sustain themselves, but also to protect themselves from predators and face environmental challenges. This consumption, often overlooked in discussions about environmental impact, is an order of magnitude greater than that of current AI.
For those evaluating on-premise deployments, there are trade-offs between initial (CapEx) and operational (OpEx) costs to consider carefully. AI-RADAR offers analytical frameworks on /llm-onpremise to evaluate these aspects.
