Linux 7.0 Addresses Power Consumption on AMD RDNA4 GPUs
A patch is coming to the Linux 7.0 kernel to resolve an idle power consumption issue found with AMD RDNA4 GPUs. Some users had reported that even after completing intensive compute workloads, such as those performed with Llama.cpp, the GPUs continued to show high power consumption and apparent full utilization, despite being in an idle state.
This anomalous behavior, in addition to impacting the energy efficiency of systems, could generate concerns about the actual availability of resources for other processes. The upcoming fix should restore power consumption to normal levels in idle conditions, improving thermal management and overall system efficiency.
For those evaluating on-premise deployments, there are trade-offs between performance, TCO, and power consumption. AI-RADAR offers analytical frameworks at /llm-onpremise to evaluate these aspects.
