Altman: AI and energy consumption, a comparison with human evolution

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, addressed concerns regarding the energy consumption of artificial intelligence systems. During a speech in India, Altman compared the energy required to train an AI to the amount of resources needed to raise and educate a human being.

Altman pointed out that the development of human intelligence requires about twenty years of life, in addition to the large amount of food consumed during this period. He suggested that, although training AI models may seem energy-intensive, it is important to consider the overall cost of intelligence development, whether artificial or biological.

For those evaluating on-premise deployments, there are trade-offs between energy costs, cooling requirements, and performance. AI-RADAR offers analytical frameworks on /llm-onpremise to evaluate these aspects.
